geography
Entre-deux-Monts is located at 806 m , about twelve kilometers south-southeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The street-lined village extends in the Jura , in an open valley basin of the Quénot, between the forest heights of Rachet in the north and Bois de Combe Noire in the south.
The area of the 5.36 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by ridges and longitudinal hollows, which are oriented towards the southwest-northeast according to the direction of the fold of the Jura in this region. The central part of the area is occupied by the approximately one kilometer wide longitudinal basin of the Quénot , which provides drainage to the west to the Lemme .
The longitudinal basin of Entre-deux-Monts is flanked in the north by the ridge of the Rachet ( 895 m ) and the Col du Gyps. In the south it is dominated by the steep slope of the Bois de la Combe Noire , the upper edge of which is crowned by a ledge. At this height, the highest point of Entre-deux-Monts is reached with 940 m . The forest height of Les Epinois ( 876 m ) forms the eastern end of the hollow . The community area extends to the west as far as the broad valley of the Lemme. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
Entre-deux-Monts includes the hamlet of Morillon ( 725 m ) in a valley widening on the Lemme at the west foot of the Bois de Combe Noire and a few individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Entre-deux-Monts are Chaux-des-Crotenay in the north, Les Planches-en-Montagne in the east, Fort-du-Plasne in the south and La Chaux-du-Dombief in the west.
history
Entre-deux-Monts was first mentioned in the early 13th century under the name Sous-Malruche ; The current name appears for the first time in 1295. At Morillon there was an important bridge crossing over the Lemme since the 15th century, where customs were levied until the end of the 18th century. Together with Franche-Comté , Entre-deux-Monts came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
