Menétrux-en-Joux is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Menétrux-en-Joux is located at 675  m , about 22 km east-southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the high plateau of Champagnole between the Combe d'Ain in the west and the chains of the High Jura in the east, north of the Hérisson valley .

The area of the 8.78 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Menétrux plateau, which is an average of 700  m . This gently undulating plateau slowly descends towards the west. It shows a loose structure of meadow and forest. The northern and eastern sections in particular have extensive forests: Bois de Beauregard , Bois du Taureau , Bois de la Signat and Bois de Jeanrau . On a crest of the Bois de Jeanrau, the highest point of Menétrux-en-Joux is reached at 819  m .

To the south the community area extends into the valley of the Hérisson. The brook has a 500 m wide, flat valley floor. Steep slopes up to 200 m high rise on both sides, which are wooded and criss-crossed with striking rock faces in various places. The current valley shape was created during the Ice Age through glacial erosion along an already existing valley leg. The municipality also has a share of the Lac du Val , through which the Hérisson flows.

In addition to the actual village, Menétrux-en-Joux also includes various hamlets and individual farms, including:

  • La Fruitière ( 690  m ) in a depression on the Menétrux plateau
  • Val-Dessous ( 505  m ) in the Hérisson valley on the south bank of Lac du Val
  • Val-Dessus ( 520  m ) in the Hérisson valley

Neighboring municipalities of Menétrux-en-Joux are Songeson in the north, Le Frasnois in the east, Bonlieu and Saugeot in the south and Denezières and Doucier in the west.

history

The megalith of Pierre-Folle and the tumuli of Menétrux-en-Joux indicate that the municipality of Menétrux-en-Joux was settled in prehistoric times. The place was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. Since the Middle Ages he belonged to the rule of Châtelneuf. In the early 17th century the Roux family, who were entrusted with the function of governors for Menétrux, built a mansion in the village. Together with Franche-Comté , Menétrux-en-Joux came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The two hamlets of Val-Dessous and Val-Dessus formed the municipality of Vaux-de-Chambly until 1815 and then merged with the municipality of Chambly. In 1821 this community was divided up again; Val-Dessous and Val-Dessus were incorporated into Menétrux-en-Joux, while Chambly was merged with Doucier.

Attractions

The Menétrux-en-Joux chapel was built in 1664. The chapel near the hamlet of La Fruitière dates from 1824. Natural attractions include the Hérisson waterfalls and Lac du Val.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Menétrux-en-Joux was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , especially cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Doucier to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux .
