David W. Smith

David W. Smith ( David Weyhe Smith ; born September 24, 1926 in Oakland , † September 1981 in Seattle ) was an American pediatrician and morphologist . The syndromes Aase-Smith , Marshall-Smith , Ruvalcaba-Myhre-Smith , Smith-Lemli-Opitz I and II , Smith-Theiler-Schachenmann and Weaver-Smith are named after him and his colleagues .

biography

Smith began his career as a pediatrician . In 1958 he became a professor of paediatrics at the University of Wisconsin Medical School and left that institution in 1966 to fill the chair at the University of Washington in Seattle , where he remained for the remainder of his career. Smith received worldwide fame and recognition for his work in the field of dysmorphology . He was a good friend of his Norwegian colleague Dagfinn Aarskog .

He published around 200 papers and six monographs , including his classic recognition schemes for human malformations, which are considered key documents in this area.
