Mairie Sirod

Sirod is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Sirod is located at 620  m , about six kilometers east of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the wide valley basin of the Val de Sirod on the upper Ain , below the Rochers des Commères.

The area of the 16.10 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Sirod basin, which is an average of 610  m , a width of 1.5 kilometers and a length of around two kilometers. The formerly marshy basin, in which an isolated hill rises, is traversed by the Ain from east to west. It leaves the basin through a deeply cut gorge (canyon of the Perte de l'Ain). It is flanked in the west by the Côte Poire (up to 780  m ) and the ridge of Château-Vilain, in the north by the height of Lent (up to 780  m ) and the rock faces of the Rochers des Commères . To the southeast, the slope rises relatively gently to the plateau of Bief-des-Maisons and to the Bois de la Chancelle . It is subdivided by the valleys of two side streams of the Ain (including the Combe Samson ). At 890  m , the highest elevation of Sirod is reached on the plateau.

Sirod includes the village of Treffay ( 772  m ) on a plateau southeast of the valley basin and a few individual farms. The neighboring communities of Sirod are Lent and Charency in the north, Conte and Gillois in the east, Les Chalesmes , Crans and Syam in the south and Bourg-de-Sirod in the west.

history

The municipality of Sirod was already settled during the Gallo-Roman period. In 522, King Sigismund of Burgundy donated the area to the Saint-Maurice monastery in the Swiss canton of Valais. In the 9th century, the Abbey of Saint-Oyend-de-Joux (now Saint-Claude ), which owned land here, founded a priory in Sirod, the church of which was later elevated to the parish church of the region. Together with Franche-Comté , Sirod came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the area changed several times: in 1823 Lent merged with Sirod, but was separated again in 1842 and again became an independent municipality. In 1972 the previously independent Treffay was incorporated into Sirod.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Etienne

The parish church, a former priory church, was built in the 12th century and then changed several times until the 16th century. It has rich interiors, including the 18th century pulpit, 16th century stone, alabaster and wood statues, 17th to 19th century goldsmithing and wall paintings. The Notre-Dame du Pont chapel, built in 1482, served as a pilgrimage destination for a long time. The castle of Sirod, the Château de Montrichard, which was originally built in the 14th century and remodeled in the Renaissance style in the 16th century, is located near the church .

With 524 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Sirod is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (730 people were still counted in 1886), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time Sirod was an agricultural village. Companies that were dependent on water power, namely mills, paper mills and sawmills, set up along the Ain at an early stage. In addition, there are now a number of small-scale businesses, including an electricity company and a company that makes watch accessories. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares, near a department road that leads from Champagnole to Arsure-Arsurette. Further road connections exist with Lent, Conte and Crans.
