Mesnois is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Mesnois is located at 460  m , about 13 kilometers southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in the valley of the Combe d'Ain, west of the course of the Ain , at the foot of the Côte de l'Heute, which is crowned here by the Château de Beauregard.

The area of the 11.47 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The eastern border runs in the area of the Ain, partly along the course of the river, partly also east of it along oxbow lakes. The Ain flows here with several meanders in a wide flat floodplain from north to south. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends westward over the plain of the Combe d'Ain (at an average of 450  m ) to the adjacent, wooded chain of the Côte de l'Heute , on which at 703  m ( Côte de Chatonnay ) the highest elevation of Mesnois is reached. In the area of the municipality of Mesnois, this chain is interrupted by a Klustal .

In addition to the actual village, Mesnois also includes several hamlets and individual farms, including:

  • Thuron ( 455  m ) in the Combe d'Ain
  • Buron ( 478  m ) at the foot of the Côte de l'Today

Neighboring municipalities of Mesnois are Blye in the north, Charézier and Patornay in the east, Pont-de-Poitte and Largillay-Marsonnay in the south and Marnézia , Nogna and Publy in the west.

history

Various finds, including the remains of a Roman road, indicate that the municipality of Mesnois was already settled in Gallo-Roman times. The place was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. Together with Franche-Comté , Mesnois came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area was changed in 1815 with the incorporation of Buron and in 1819 with the incorporation of Thuron. Both localities previously formed independent communities.

With 187 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Mesnois is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (308 people were counted in 1911), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Mesnois was a predominantly agricultural village until well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N78, which leads from Lons-le-Saunier to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux . Another road connection is with Blye.
