Saffloz is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Saffloz is located at 654 m , about 23 kilometers east of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a hollow on the high plateau of Champagnole between the Combe d'Ain in the west and the chains of the High Jura in the east, near the Lac de Chalain .
The area of the 8.65 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the high plateau of Champagnole, which is on average 670 m . This slightly undulating plateau shows a loose structure of meadow, farmland and forest. To the east, the municipality extends into extensive forest areas that gradually rise towards the heights of the Grands Bois . At 815 m , the highest point in Saffloz is reached in the Bois Molard du Taureau . The entire area shows no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the subsoil, which consists of porous limestone.
Neighboring municipalities of Saffloz are Mont-sur-Monnet and Loulle in the north, Châtelneuf in the east, Le Frasnois and Chevrotaine in the south and Fontenu in the west.
history
The village was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century under the name Essarts-Flots . Essarts can be traced back to exsartum , the past participle of the late Latin word exsarire (to clear, to make arable), while Flots means something like moor , swamp . Over time, the place name changed to today's Saffloz. The village has belonged to the Châtelneuf rule since the Middle Ages. Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
Saffloz Church was built in 1790; the bell tower is from the early 19th century. It served as a parish church for the parishes of Saffloz, Fontenu and Chevrotaine until the 1960s.

With 102 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saffloz is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (208 people were still counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Saffloz was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, as well as forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. Road connections exist with Champagnole , Mont-sur-Monnet, Doucier and Chevrotaine.
