Saint-Germain-en-Montagne is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Saint-Germain-en-Montagne is located at 630 m , about five kilometers north-northeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , on the eastern edge of the Angillon plateau at the foot of the heights of the Forêt de la Fresse and northeast of Mont Rivel.
The area of the 5.35 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by a plateau, which is on average 600 m and consists mainly of arable and meadow land. To the west, the municipal area extends close to the banks of the Étang du Moutoux , a moor lake in the Angillon catchment area. In the east, the area extends over a densely wooded slope on the ridge of the Forêt de la Fresse , an elongated Jura ridge oriented in a north-south direction. Here, at 850 m, the highest point in Saint-Germain-en-Montagne is reached.
Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Germain-en-Montagne are Moutoux in the north, Les Nans in the east, Équevillon and Vannoz in the south and Le Pasquier in the west.
history
The municipality of Saint-Germain-en-Montagne was populated very early. A testimony from prehistoric times is the Pierre Lite, a megalith in the Forêt de la Fresse. During the Gallo-Roman period there was an extensive Roman estate, which was probably called Placentia and was destroyed by the invading Germans in the 3rd century AD. During excavations, numerous remains of the Roman villa were discovered, including sewers, fountains, ceramic fragments and bronze statuettes.
The Saint-Germain-dans-les-Bois priory was probably founded as early as the 5th century, where the later settlement developed. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Germain-en-Montagne formed its own lordship, which was separated from the lordship of Montrivel and was subordinate to the lords of Chalon-Arlay from 1315. In 1294 the village was granted certain freedoms. Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The current parish church of Saint-Germain was built in 1770; the bell tower dates from 1790.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Germain-en-Montagne was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, mainly in Champagnole.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Pont de Gratteroche (on the main road N5) to Mournans-Charbonny . There are other road connections with Équevillon, Vannoz and Moutoux.
