Bief-du-Fourg is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Bief-du-Fourg is located at 860 m , about 17 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Champagnole . The farming village extends in the Jura on an extensive plateau that connects to the east of the Val de Mièges .
The area of the 10.20 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by a plateau, which averages 860 m . It shows only very small differences in relief and is mainly covered by meadow and pasture land. The high plateau has no noteworthy surface running waters. In some hollows, which are sealed by layers of marl and clay , raised bogs and individual bog ponds could develop. To the east, the municipal area extends to the south bank of the moor lake Étang de Frasne and to the north over the Briselaine corridor into the Bois de la Ville forest . At 883 m , the highest point in Bief-du-Fourg is reached on the southern edge of the municipality near Petit-Villard.
Neighboring municipalities of Bief-du-Fourg are Courvières and Frasne in the north, Bonnevaux in the east, Mignovillard and Communailles-en-Montagne in the south and Censeau in the west.
history
Bief-du-Fourg was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. For a long time the community was called Bief-du-Fort . In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Nozeroy rule . The village was granted certain freedoms in 1350 to promote the settlement of the area. Together with Franche-Comté , Bief-du-Fourg came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church of Bief-du-Fourg was built in the 18th century. A manor house dates from the 19th century.

With 203 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Bief-du-Fourg is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had declined markedly in the first half of the 20th century (377 people were still counted in 1886), slight population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Bief-du-Fourg was a village dominated by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding. In the past, peat was cut in the bog areas. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a cheese dairy. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares near a department road that leads from Censeau to Labergement-Sainte-Marie . Other road connections exist with Frasne, Mignovillard and Communailles-en-Montagne.
