The area of the 4.01 km² Commune déléguée covers a section of the French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which averages 860  m . It shows only very small differences in relief and is mainly covered by meadow and pasture land. history

Communailles is first mentioned in a document in 1275. The place name is derived from the old French word comunaille and means something like common pastureland . In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Nozeroy rule . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In the 18th century, Communailles was badly affected by a village fire. There was a change of area in 1813 when the previously independent Boucherans was incorporated into Communailles. In 1916 the community was officially renamed Communailles-en-Montagne. The community was incorporated into Mignovillard on January 1, 2016.

With 48 inhabitants most recently (as of January 1, 2013), Communailles-en-Montagne was one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (135 people were still counted in 1886), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Communailles-en-Montagne was a village dominated by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Nozeroy to Frasne . Further road connections exist with Censeau and Bonnevaux .
