geography

Mignovillard is located at 860  m , about 17 km east-northeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , on an extensive plateau between the Val de Mièges and the Jura chain of the Haute Joux.

The area of the 53.82 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which averages 860  m . It shows only very small differences in relief and is mainly covered by meadow and pasture land, in the eastern part mainly covered by forest. In the far west, the Ruisseau du Martinet and Ruisseau d'Essavilly stream drainage to the serpentine and thus to the Ain . Otherwise, the entire high plateau has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In some hollows, which are sealed by layers of marl and clay , raised bogs and individual bog ponds could develop.

The high plateau rises gradually to the southeast. The community area extends over the extensive forest of the Forêt de Mignovillard ( 1105  m ) to the northeastern foothills of the Haute Joux chain system . This impassable forest area shows various karst phenomena such as sinkholes , drainless depressions, cart fields and caves. The highest peaks are reached on the Crêt Mathiez Sarrazin ( 1174  m ) and near the summit of the Turchet (up to 1189  m ).

In addition to the actual village, Mignovillard also includes various villages, hamlets and individual farms, namely:

  • Petit-Villard ( 881  m ) on the high plateau east of the Val de Mièges
  • Froidefontaine ( 852  m ) on the high plateau east of the Val de Mièges
  • Essavilly ( 860  m ) on the high plateau near the source of the Ruisseau d'Essavilly
  • Les Granges-du-Sillet ( 915  m ) in a hollow in the Forêt de Mignovillard

Neighboring municipalities of Mignovillard are Communailles-en-Montagne and Bief-du-Fourg in the north, Bonnevaux , Vaux-en-Chantegrue and Remoray-Boujeons in the east, Rondefontaine , Les Pontets and Cerniébaud in the south and La Latette , Longcochon and Molpré in the west.

history

Mignovillard was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the Nozeroy rule . In 1639 the village was sacked by the troops of Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar . Together with Franche-Comté , Mignovillard came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. After Mignovillard merged with Petit-Villard in 1965, the new municipality was named Mignovillard-Petit-Villard. Since the incorporation of Essavilly and Froidefontaine in 1972, the larger municipality is again called Mignovillard. On January 1, 2016, the municipality of Communailles-en-Montagne was incorporated into Mignovillard.

On January 9, 2019, parts of a French Mirage 2000D fighter aircraft that had disappeared from the radar and probably crashed were discovered near the site.

In addition, there are now a number of small-scale businesses, including a sawmill and a company that manufactures watch accessories. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
