geography

Arinthod is located in the southwest of the Jura department, 90 kilometers northeast of Lyon , about 50 kilometers northwest of Geneva and 17 kilometers northwest of Oyonnax , between the neighboring communities of Chisséria in the south, Dramelay in the northwest and Cézia in the east. The Valouse flows west of the town center through the municipality. About 41.65% of the municipal area is forested. The hamlets of Vogna and Néglia belong to the municipality.

The (total) population of the municipality of Arinthod was determined by adding the municipality of Chisséria, which was independent until the end of 2017.

history

Arinthod was first mentioned in a document in 1155. The village was built on the edge of the fortifications of the Dramelay castle , the ruins of which are in the municipality of Dramelay. Your donjon can still be visited. The Grand Master of the Templar Order Bernard de Tromelai (1100–1153) lived there.

In 1793 Arinthod received in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a community and in 1801 the right to local self-government. In 1822 the hamlet of Vogna (then Vognat ), which had 164 inhabitants in 1821, was incorporated. From 1793 to 2015 Arinthod was also the capital of the canton of Arinthod .

From 1901 to 1939 Arinthod was on the railway line La Bifurcation - Arinthod of the railway company Chemins de fer vicinaux du Jura . The line was a branch of the Lons - Saint-Claude line . The station building has not been preserved.

On January 1, 2018, the neighboring municipality of Chisséria was incorporated.

In the north of Arinthod is the Zone d'activité de la Forêt industrial area , in the west is an industrial area in which the Smoby company operates a production facility. Important occupations in Arinthod are forestry and the breeding of domestic cattle and fish . There is also an on-site dairy cooperative that makes cheese.
