La Frasnée is a commune in the Jura department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

La Frasnée is located at 550  m , about 24 km southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the Drouvenant valley, cut deep into the surrounding plateaus , on the western edge of the chains of the Upper Jura.

The area of the 3.19 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the Drouvenant valley, which provides drainage to the Ain . The valley draws an arc near the village of La Frasnée: initially it is oriented in a south-north direction, below the village it turns to the northwest. The Drouvenant has a 500 m wide, flat valley floor. Steep slopes up to 200 m high rise on both sides, which are wooded and, especially above La Frasnée, crisscrossed with striking rock faces. The current valley shape was created during the Ice Age through glacial erosion along an already existing valley leg. The valley is flanked in the west by the height of the Forêt de la Joux (up to 775  m , highest point of La Frasnée), in the east by the high plateau of the Forêt de la Crochère . The border runs above the steep drop to the Drouvenant valley.

Neighboring municipalities of La Frasnée are Clairvaux-les-Lacs and Cogna in the north, Saint-Maurice-Crillat in the east, Châtel-de-Joux in the south and Hautecour in the west.

history

The municipality of La Frasnée was already populated in prehistoric times and during Roman times. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1208. The place name is derived from the old French word fresnaie (ash grove ). La Frasnée has belonged to the domain of Clairvaux since the Middle Ages. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
