Billecul is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Billecul is located at 837 m , about eleven kilometers east of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the plateau south of the Val de Mièges and east of the source of the Ain .
The area of the 4.41 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is occupied by the plateau of Billecul, which averages 860 m . It rises gradually towards the south, shows only very small differences in relief and is mainly covered by meadow and pasture land. On a hilltop in the hallway Le Mariage is with 926 m the highest elevation of Billecul reached. The dry valley La Grande Combe is to the west of the municipal area . The plateau has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.
Neighboring municipalities of Billecul are Rix in the north, Fraroz in the east, Arsure-Arsurette in the south and La Favière in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Billecul belonged to the Nozeroy rule . In the 17th century the population suffered from several plague epidemics. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 47 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Billecul is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. In the first half of the 20th century, the population had decreased significantly. There has also been a further steady decline until recently.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Billecul was a village dominated by agriculture, especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares near a department road that leads from Nozeroy to Arsure-Arsurette. Further road connections exist with La Favière and Fraroz.
