Church of St. George in Songeson |
Songeson is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Songeson is located at 610 m , about 21 kilometers east of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the high plateau of Champagnole between the Combe d'Ain in the west and the chains of the High Jura in the east, near the Lac de Chalain .
The area of the 8.42 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Songeson plateau, which is an average of 600 m . This gently undulating, approximately 2 km wide plateau drops steeply in the north to Lac de Chalain, in the south to Lac de Chambly , with the municipal boundary running on the upper edge of the slope. It shows a loose structure of meadow, farmland and forest. To the east, the municipal area extends into extensive forest areas that gradually rise towards the height of the Bois de la Signat . The highest point of Songeson is reached here at 832 m . The entire area shows no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the subsoil, which consists of porous limestone.
Neighboring communities of Songeson are Fontenu and Chevrotaine in the north, Le Frasnois in the east, Menétrux-en-Joux in the south and Doucier in the west.
history
Songeson was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. The village has belonged to the Châtelneuf rule since the Middle Ages. Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church of Saint George in Songeson was built in the 16th century and modified in the 17th century.

With 69 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Songeson is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (197 people were still counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Songeson was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle breeding and dairy farming, as well as forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Doucier to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux . Another road connection is with Fontenu.
