Soucia is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Soucia is located at 588  m , about 21 kilometers southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The cluster village extends in the western Jura , on a high plateau between the valley cut of the Lac de Vouglans in the west and the wooded chains of the High Jura in the east.

The area of the 12.37 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part is occupied by the Soucia plateau, which lies at an average of 600  m and is located in the broad valley of the Ain . The plateau is drained by the Vallon de la Serra to the west to Lac de Vouglans . To the west, the community soil extends over an approximately 100 m high step down into the bog area of Barésia. The northern boundary of the plateau forms the depression of the Lacs de Clairvaux , with the south bank of the Petit Lac de Clairvaux belonging to Soucia. To the east, the community area extends over a slowly rising slope into the extensive wooded area of the Forêt de la Joux . The highest point of Soucia is reached here on a narrow ridge at 884  m .

Soucia includes the village of Champsigna ( 510  m ) on the eastern edge of the Barésia moor and a few individual farms. Neighboring communities of Soucia are Clairvaux-les-Lacs in the north, Châtel-de-Joux in the east, Thoiria in the south and Barésia-sur-l'Ain in the west.

history

The municipality of Soucia was already settled in prehistoric times. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1090. The place name developed over the centuries via Soussia and Souciat to become today's spelling. Soucia has belonged to the Clairvaux barony since the Middle Ages. In the 17th century the population suffered from severe plague epidemics. Together with Franche-Comté , Soucia came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1822 when the previously independent Champsigna was incorporated into Soucia.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Georges was given its current form when it was rebuilt in 1781. Only a few remains of the former manor house of La Rochette have survived.

With 187 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Soucia is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the number of inhabitants had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1906 were still 264 people), it has shown a significant increase since the beginning of the 21st century.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Soucia was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on the D27 department road, which leads from Meussia to Clairvaux-les-Lacs. Other road connections exist with Thoira, Barésia-sur-l'Ain and Pont-de-Poitte .
