Tadawul ( Arabic تداول Tadāwul ) is the Saudi Arabian stock exchange in Riyadh .

Stock exchange

The Saudi Arabian public limited companies originated in 1935 when the Arab Automobile Company was formed as the country's first corporation. Numerous joint-stock companies have been founded in Saudi Arabia and shares have been traded informally since the 1970s . In 1975 there were about 14 corporations. On November 23, 1984, the stock exchange was formally opened with the creation of the Saudi Share Registration Company. It is regulated by a committee that includes the ministers for finance and trade and the governor of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA), the Saudi Arabian central bank . On October 6, 2001, the Tadawul trading system was introduced. It replaced the Electronic Securities Information System (ESIS) launched in 1990. Trading time is from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. local time (7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. CET ).

The Saudi Arabian stock market is one of the largest in the Middle East. According to the Arab Monetary Fund, it was ranked number one in the Arab world in 2006 for market capitalization , number of stocks traded, and trading volume . The capitalization of the Tadawul was about 50 percent of the value of all Arab stock exchanges. Between 2000 and 2006, the number of shares traded on the stock exchange rose from 2.8 billion to 68.5 billion and their value from 65.3 billion Saudi riyals to 5,262 billion Saudi rials. On August 15, 2010, 144 companies were listed on the stock exchange. The main reasons for the growth in stock exchange operations were the growth of gross domestic product (GDP), corporate profits and the number of investors. Other factors included the increased return of capital invested abroad and the government's economic reform measures.
