Censeau is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Censeau is located at 830 m , about 14 km northeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , on the extensive plateau that connects to the north of the Val de Mièges, in the headwaters of the Serpentine .
The area of the municipal area of 9.86 km² covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by a plateau, which averages 840 m . It shows only very small differences in relief and is mainly covered by meadow and pasture land. The high plateau has no noteworthy surface running waters. In some hollows, which are sealed by layers of marl and clay , raised bogs could develop. To the north, the municipal area extends over the high plateau to the Bois de la Ville forest , where the highest point in Censeau is reached at 882 m . The serpentine rises south of Censeau and flows through a basin, first southwards and then westwards through the Val de Mièges to the Ain .
In addition to the actual village, Censeau also includes several hamlets and individual farms, including:
- Le Magasin ( 842 m ) at a crossroads on the high plateau
- Les Grangettes ( 820 m ) in the valley of the serpentine
Neighboring municipalities of Censeau are Cuvier and Courvières in the north, Bief-du-Fourg in the east, Communailles-en-Montagne , Molpré and Mièges in the south and Esserval-Combe and Esserval-Tartre in the west.
history
Censeau was first mentioned in a document in the 14th century. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Nozeroy rule . Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1813 when the previously independent Les Grangettes was incorporated into Censeau.
Attractions
The village church of Censeau was consecrated in 1749. It has an onion-dome bell tower (completed in 1804), a Louis XV style pulpit and a marble altar.

Economy and Infrastructure
For a long time, Censeau was a village characterized by agriculture, especially cattle breeding and dairy farming. In addition, there are now a number of small-scale businesses, including one eyeglass manufacturing company and one building industry. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main D471 road from Champagnole to Pontarlier . Other road connections exist with Andelot-en-Montagne , Levier , Labergement-Saint-Marie and Nozeroy.
