Crançot is a town and commune Déléguée in the French community Haute Roche with 592 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Crançot is located at 515 m , about eight kilometers east of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , in the south of the Lédonia plateau (first Jura plateau), between the erosion valley of the Cirque de Baume in the northwest and the heights of the Côte de l'Today in the east.
The area of the 14.37 km² former municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by the plain of the Plateau Lédonia, which lies at an average of 520 m and consists partly of arable land and meadow, partly of forest. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the west, the municipal soil extends into the Bois de Perrigny . The northern boundary mostly runs along the upper edge of the rock wall that surrounds the Cirque de Baume. To the east, the municipality extends into the vast wooded areas of Bois des Chaumois and Bois du Latet . At 561 m , the highest point of Crançot is reached here.
The hamlet of Sur Roche ( 510 m ) on the plateau south of the Cirque de Baume belonged to Crançot . Neighboring towns of Crançot are Baume-les-Messieurs in the north, Mirebel in the east, Vevy in the south and Perrigny in the west.
history
Crançot was first mentioned in a document in the 11th century. The place name probably goes back to the Celtic word kranno (stone). The village of On, which is also located in today's municipal area, was destroyed in the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , Crançot came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
With effect from January 1, 2016, Crançot was merged with the former municipalities of Granges-sur-Baume and Mirebel to form Commune nouvelle Hauteroche and has since been their main town (Chef-lieu). The municipality of Crançot belonged to the arrondissement of Lons-le-Saunier and the canton of Poligny .
Attractions
The village church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine was built in the middle of the 16th century in Gothic style. One chapel dates from the 18th century. From the Belvédère des Roches de Baume there is a beautiful view of the precipices of the Cirque de Baume.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Crançot was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. Marble was quarried at Crançot at an early stage, with the quarrying stopped in the middle of the 20th century. In addition, there are now some small and medium-sized businesses, including a sawmill and an electromechanical company. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road D471, which leads from Lons-le-Saunier to Champagnole . There are other road connections with Vevy, Baume-les-Messieurs and La Marre.
