René Rémond (born September 30, 1918 in Lons-le-Saunier , Jura department , † April 14, 2007 in Paris ) was a French historian and political scientist .

Life

After attending the Paris high schools Lycée Carnot , Lycée Condorcet and Lycée Louis-le-Grand , he first became a soldier in 1939 in World War II (for which he received the Croix de Guerre). In the 1930s he was active in the Jeunesse étudiante chrétienne (JEC), whose general secretary he became in 1943. In 1942 he then studied at the école normal supérieure , where he was accepted as early as 1939, but initially did military service, and became Pierre Renouvin's assistant . His dissertation in 1952 with Charles-Henri Pouthas dealt with the perception of the USA in France from 1815 to 1852 . He was then assistant at the Sorbonne and from 1956 research director at the Fondation nationale des sciences politiques (FNSP) and Maître de conférences and then professor at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris . In 1964 he became the first French professor of 20th century history in the faculty of the newly created University of Paris-Nanterre . In the 1968 riots he took a mediating point of view. He avoided the climax in May 1968 to Rome. He then took part in university reforms and was President of the University of Paris-Nanterre from 1971 to 1976.

From Rémond comes the division of the right and conservative political currents in France across the board into Legitimists , Orléanists and Bonapartists . To the latter he counted a. the Boulangists and the Gaullists , since they rely on popularism and authoritarian leadership. Among the legitimists he counted the royalists in the 19th century, who rejected the republic and later z. B. Action Française and the movement of Jean-Marie Le Pen . Among the Orléanists who stood for economic liberalism in the 19th century and was supported by the bourgeoisie, he counts today's conservative parties in the center of France. He introduced this in his main work La Droite en France de 1815 à nos jours 1954.

He was a founding member of the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences . The Polish Academy of Sciences , he belonged to an external member.

Since 1998 he was a member of the Académie française ; there Claude Dagens was his successor. Rémond was a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, received the Grand Cross of the Ordre National du Mérite, was Commander of the Palmes Académique and Commandeur de Arts et Lettres.

From 1981 to January 2007 he was president of the elite political science foundation Fondation nationale des sciences politiques .

He is the nephew of the Bishop of Nice Paul Rémond , who was honored in Israel as Righteous Among the Nations .
