Claude Dagens

Claude Dagens (born May 20, 1940 in Caudéran , France ) is a French clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic bishop of Angoulême .

Life

Claude Jean Pierre Dagens was born the son of a city official. He attended the Montaigne high school in Bordeaux and studied Catholic theology at the École française in Rome and at the Institut catholique de Paris with degrees in theology, humanities and Christian archeology . On October 4, 1970, he was for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bordeaux for ordained priests . After two years as a parish priest in Paris, he was appointed professor in the interdiocesan seminary of Bordeaux in 1972 . From 1981 to 1987 he also served as dean of the theological faculty of Toulouse .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Poitiers and titular bishop of Vulturaria on July 3, 1987 . The Archbishop of Bordeaux, Marius Maziers , donated him episcopal ordination on September 20 of the same year . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Toulouse , André Charles Collini , and the Bishop of Poitiers, Joseph Rozier .

On June 15, 1993, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of the Angoulême diocese, where he succeeded his predecessor on December 22 of that year.

In the French Bishops' Conference he was a member of the Doctrine Commission and chairman of the working group on religious indifference and making the Catholic Church visible.

In April 2008 he was accepted into the Académie française and succeeded René Rémond as holder of the first chair .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on November 9, 2015.
