Georges Rol

Georges Rol (born May 22, 1926 in Thiviers , France , † April 13, 2017 in Angoulême , France) was a French clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Angoulême .

Life

Georges Rol studied theology and philosophy at the Catholic Institute in Toulouse and was ordained a priest on February 28, 1953 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 27, 1973 titular bishop of Gabii and coadjutor bishop of Angoulême. The Bishop of Tulle , Jean-Baptiste Brunon PSS , donated him episcopal ordination on May 1st of the same year ; Co -consecrators were René-Noël-Joseph Kérautret , Bishop of Angoulême, and Anthyme Bayala , Bishop of Koudougou . With the resignation of René-Noël-Joseph Kérautret on July 1, 1975, he succeeded him as Bishop of Angoulême.

In December 1987, he and Pierre Plateau , Archbishop of Bourges , brought a lawsuit against the French government, which at the time was planning to move school lessons from Saturday to Wednesday. Rol and Plateau feared cuts in the catechism .

After the approval of his resignation by Pope John Paul II on December 22, 1993, he was professor at the Major Seminary in Ouidah in Benin until 1998 .
