Philippe I. de Croÿ (* November 1436 ; † September 18, 1482 in Bruges ) from the old Franco-Burgundian noble family of the Croÿ was second Count of Chimay , Seigneur of Sempy and Quiévrain and an influential member of the Burgundian court. He should not be confused with his cousin of the same name, Philippe I. de Croÿ , Count of Porcéan (1435–1511), who also held an important position at the Burgundian court.

Life

Philippe was knighted in 1453 after the Battle of Gavre . He served the Burgundian dukes Philip the Good and Charles the Bold as military leader, envoy, councilor and chamberlain . In 1458 he was appointed captain general (capitaine générale) of Hainaut .

Due to the pro-French attitude of his family at the Burgundian court, he had to flee from the Burgundian territories in 1465 together with other family members, including his father Jean II and his uncle Antoine I , but he soon came back and was led by Charlemagne in 1468 Bold officially pardoned.

Philippe was elected a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1473 and was governor of Gelderland between 1474 and 1477 .

He was captured during the Battle of Nancy on January 5, 1477, in which Charles the Bold lost his life. After his release in August 1477, he returned to the Burgundian court and entered the service of the new Duke Maximilian I , becoming his first chamberlain and captain general of Luxembourg .

family

Philippe's parents were Jean II. De Croÿ († March 25, 1473) and Marie de Lalaing († January 20, 1475). Among his brothers was, for example, Jacques de Croÿ the Prince-Bishop and Duke of Cambrai .

In 1454 he married Walburga von Moers , daughter of Count Vinzenz von Moers and his wife Anne of Bavaria. Together they had the following children:

  • Charles (1455–1527), a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece, married Louise d'Albret in 1495
  • Antoine († 1546), governor of Quesnoy, married 1.) Louise de Luxembourg († 1518) and 2.) Anna von der Gracht
  • Françoise, married Antoine de Luxembourg, Count of Charny († 1519) ( House Luxemburg-Ligny )
  • Catherine, married Robert II de La Marck in 1491
  • Marguerite († February 7, 1514), married Jacob, Count of Horn in 1501
