Jean II. De Croÿ (* around 1403 ; † March 25, 1473 in Valenciennes , buried in the church of Chimay ) from the old Franco-Burgundian noble family of the Croÿ was the first Count of Chimay , lord of Tours-sur-Marne , captain-general of Hainaut and an important member of the court of the Burgundian dukes.

Life

Jean was one of the consultants Duke Philip the Good , held various missions as a military leader and ruled from 1434 to 1438 as a grand baillif and capitaine général to Hainaut . In 1435 he received 2500 saluts in bribes from the French King Charles VII . Jean worked as a permanent ambassador to the King of France and was a member of the pro-French party at the Burgundian court. He had to flee from the Burgundian territories together with other members of the families in 1465, but soon came back and was officially pardoned by Charles the Bold in 1468 .

In 1430 Jean was one of the first 24 members of the Order of the Golden Fleece and in 1454 he took part in the spectacular Burgundian Pheasant Festival.

family

Jeans parents were Jean I. de Croÿ († 1415 at the Battle of Azincourt ) and Marie de Craon and he was the younger brother of Antoine I. de Croÿ , the powerful chief minister of Philip the Good.

He married Marie de Lalaing († January 20, 1475) on November 28, 1428, and they had the following children together:

  • Jacqueline (1430–1500), married to Jean IV de Nesle.
  • Philippe I (1436–1482), his successor.
  • Jacques († August 15, 1516), Prince-Bishop of Cambrai .
  • Catherine (1440–1515), married to Adrien de Brimeu (1471 / 72–1515).
  • Michel (1445 / 46–1516), member of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
