John IV of Egmond

Johann IV of Egmond (* 1499 ; † April 29, 1528 in Milan ) was the second Count of Egmond and holder of the Order of the Golden Fleece . He was lord of Hoogtwoude, Aartswoude and Baar.

He is the son of Johann III. von Egmond (1438–1516) and his wife Magdalena von Werdenberg (1464–1538).

Life

Johann was born in one of the richest families in Holland. At the age of 17 he was married to the heir to Jacob II von Luxemburg-Fiennes . At the same time he became chamberlain to Emperor Charles V. The Luxemburg-Fiennes family owned great estates in Artois and Picardy , such as Auxy-le-chateau, Vennes, Montorgueil, Dompierre, Estouyes, Flavy, Fontaine-sur-Somme, Basentin, Averdoing, in the County of St. Paul, Barony Fiennes, in Boulonois, the County of Gavere on the Scheldt between Oudenaarde and Gent , the great Lordship of Armentières and Erquinghem on the Leie not far from Lille , the Barony of Sotteghem, in the land of Aelst, the Lordship of Cantaing, one of the pairies of Cambresis, Hamaide, in Hainaut , the great lordship of Vierde not far from Charlemont.

The count stayed mostly in the emperor's entourage. Meanwhile, Karl von Egmond made the country unsafe and destroyed the village of Egmond. The castle was successfully defended by his brother-in-law Johann von Wassenaar .

In 1527 the emperor appointed him commander of the light cavalry of Naples and Milan. On a trip he fell ill in Ferrara and died shortly afterwards in Milan.

Since 1516 he was married to Franziska von Luxemburg , Countess von Gavre, Dame de Fiennes († November 1, 1557), daughter of Jacob II von Luxemburg-Fiennes. The couple had the following children:
