Charles I of Egmond
Charles I of Egmond († December 7, 1541 in Cartagena ) was the third Count of Egmond . He was the eldest son of John IV of Egmond (1499–1528) and his wife Franziska von Luxemburg († 1557).
Life
After the early death of his father, he became Count of Egmond. His mother probably ran the business. In 1540 she was able to convert the county of Gavere into a principality. In 1541, Emperor Charles V decided to campaign against the barbarian pirates . As loyal supporters of the emperor, Karl and his brother Lamoral joined the campaign. Against the advice of his Genoese admiral Andrea Doria , the emperor wanted to occupy Algiers in October.
However, the fleet got into bad weather and was unable to land all of the material. A hurricane on October 24th and 25th, 1541 sank 150 ships. Ultimately, the army had to withdraw again. Karl fell ill during the campaign and was brought to Cartagena in Spain. On the way back the ships got into bad weather again, so his brother landed with his ship in Corsica . The sick Charles did not recover and died in Spain in 1541.
