The Luzon Zwergohreule ( Otus longicornis ) is an owl from the genus of scops owl .
description
The very small owl reaches a length of 18 to 19 centimeters. The upper side is colored in a strong ocher brown with black-brown lines and irregular bands as well as a continuous white neck band. The whitish chin and the white throat stand in contrast to the red-brown chest, which is brightly black and more indistinctly spotted with white. The belly and flanks are predominantly white with black and rust-brown spots. The forehead and eyebrows are white, but the long feather ears are colored like the head. The eyes are bright yellow, the beak is dull green with a dark brown tip. The legs are featherless on the lowest centimeter and whitish flesh-colored like the toes, which end in long gray claws.
Way of life
It inhabits moist forests with a closed canopy in the foreland as well as mountain coniferous forests from 700 to 1500, sometimes up to 2200 meters. The main food is made up of insects. The call is a melancholy, drawn out sound huuo that can be heard at intervals of three to five seconds.
distribution
The species is endemic to the island of Luzon in the north of the Philippines . It is not uncommon, but declines due to habitat destruction and is therefore classified as endangered by BirdLife International .
