Thelma Hopkins

Thelma Hopkins (born March 16, 1936 in Kingston upon Hull ) is a British athlete .

In the high jump she held the world record for women in the high jump with 1.74 m until 1956. In 1954 she became European champion. In 1956 she won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Melbourne , having finished fourth four years earlier .

At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954 , she competed for Northern Ireland . She won the high jump with 1.68 meters and was second behind Yvette Williams in the long jump with 5.84 meters .
