John McCormack (born January 9, 1935 in Glasgow , † May 23, 2014 in Paisley , Scotland ) was a British middleweight boxer.

amateur

McCormack won 103 fights as an amateur with six losses. In 1956 he won the Scottish and British light middleweight championships and was then sent as a British representative to the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne . He won the bronze medal there in his weight class, after he was defeated in the semifinals to the American José Torres on points.

Professional career

In 1957 he became a professional and in July 1958 Scottish middleweight champion. In September 1959, he managed to win the combined Commonwealth / British middleweight championship. His opponent Terry Downes was disqualified in the eighth round. However, McCormack lost the rematch two months later by knockout in the eighth round.

In October 1961 he won the vacant European middleweight title by winning points over the Dutchman Harko Kokmeijer . McCormack's predecessor Gustav "Bubi" Scholz from Germany had resigned the title because of his move to light heavyweight. In January 1962 he defended the title with a points victory against the German Heinz Freytag . But just a month later he was disqualified in the title fight against the Dane Christian Christensen in the fourth round.

His old opponent Terry Downes had now resigned the British middleweight title. McCormack fought George Aldridge for the title in November 1962 , but was knocked out in the fourth round.

He completed his last fight against his Irish namesake in June 1966 at London's Royal Albert Hall . Irishman John "Young" McCormack won on points.
