Terry Downes (born May 9, 1936 in Paddington (London) , † October 6, 2017 ) was a British boxer and film actor . He was world champion of professional middleweight boxers .

Career

Terry Downes became a professional boxer at the age of 21 after a short amateur period in which he achieved no significant results. His manager became Sam Burns. He fought his first fight on April 9, 1957 in London , knocking out his compatriot Peter Longo in the first round. In his third fight he met Dick Tiger , a Nigerian living in England , against whom he was in the 5th round by techn. KO lost. At the time of this encounter, Dick Tiger had been a professional boxer for five years and was therefore much more experienced than Terry Downes. At this point in time he did not yet have a title. He later became world champion and one of the best middleweight boxers ever in the ring.

This defeat set Terry Downes only briefly. On April 15, 1958 and June 3, 1958, he defeated two well-known boxers in London, the former world number one middleweight Tuzo Portuguez from Puerto Rico and the former British Empire middleweight champion Pat McAteer . With these victories he took a huge step forward. On September 30, 1958 he defeated Phil Edwards in London by techn. KO in the 13th round and became British middleweight champion after only a year and a half as a professional.

Shortly after this success, Terry Downes suffered two setbacks. He lost on December 9, 1958 in London against the American Spider Webb by tech. KO in the 8th round and on February 24, 1959 in London against the Frenchman Michel Diouf by KO in the 5th round. This defeat in particular hurt, because Diouf was by no means one of the top international boxers and was actually intended as a build-up opponent for Terry Downes. He also lost after a seven-month break on September 15, 1959 in London in the fight for the middleweight title of the British Empire and for the British middleweight championship against the Scottish John McCormack by disqualification in the 8th round. In the revenge meeting on November 3, 1959, back in London, in which it was again about the aforementioned titles, he won over John McCormack through techn. KO in the 8th round.

On October 11, 1960, Terry Downes defeated in London in a fight in which the right to challenge the reigning middleweight champion Paul Pender , the experienced former middleweight world champion, the American Joey Giardello after ten rounds on points. It was one of the most notable victories in Terry Downes' career. On January 14, 1961, Terry Downes fought in Boston / Mass. against the US world champion Paul Pender for his middleweight title. Paul Pender won this fight after 15 rounds on points. Six months later, on July 11, 1961, Terry Downes won the revenge against Paul Pender in London through techn. KO in the 10th round and was the new middleweight world champion.

The duels Downes against Pender went on and on April 7, 1962 Paul Pender took Terry Downes in Boston by a points win after 15 rounds from the world title again. After a victory over Don Fullmer from the USA, on May 22, 1962 in London, Terry Downes defeated on September 25, 1962 in London also Sugar Ray Robinson from the United States over ten rounds on points. Robinson was 41 years old at the time of the fight but was still in great shape. Terry Downes' win over Robinson was well deserved and a great achievement. Robinson is still considered by most boxing experts today as the best middleweight boxer in the world who ever stood in the ring.

On November 13, 1962 Terry Downes managed the last victory against a high-ranking international opponent. He defeated the American Phil Moyer in London by techn. KO in the 9th round. Surprisingly, on November 30, 1964, he was given another chance to box for a world title. He faced defending champion Willie Pastrano from the United States in Manchester . It was about the WBC and WBA light heavyweight titles. Pastrano won this fight through tech. KO in the 11th round.

After that fight, Terry Downes, who was a decidedly handsome boxer who combined excellent technique with solid punch, as his 29 early wins prove, ended his boxing career. He was only 28 years old, but unlike many other boxers, he found the right time to retire.

After the boxer career

Terry Downes worked in 17 film and television productions from 1965 to 1990. He mostly played the villain or the police officer. The most famous film in which he participated was Roman Polanski's Dance of the Vampires . He lived in Oxhey , Hertfordshire with his wife Barbara and had five children and eight grandchildren.
