Johannes Janda

John Janda (* 3. January 1827 in Klein Darko joke at Hultschin ; † 14. November 1875 in Berlin ) was a German sculptor of Classicism .

Life

Johannes Janda learned to carve holy figures from his father, a carpenter. From 1845 he attended the Breslau art school. On the recommendation of Baron von Stücker, he was accepted into the Berlin workshop of the important sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch in 1849 . In 1864 Janda set up his own studio in Berlin. In 1867 he went on a trip to Rome, from which his sketchbooks have been preserved. His works include carved crucifixes made of wood and ivory, figures of saints, busts and portrait medals, but also large sculptures made of stone and marble.
