Kurt Bimler

Kurt Bimler (born September 28, 1883 in Alt-Schalkowitz , † June 5, 1951 in Wiesbaden ) was a German art historian and sculptor .

life and work

Kurt Bimler was the son of the drawing teacher Hans Bimler (1860–1929). He attended grammar school in Beuthen and from 1904 studied German, French and history in Breslau and Bonn . In 1907 he received his doctorate from Max Koch in Breslau . He worked as a secondary school teacher in Beuthen and collected art objects. His collection was exhibited in Beuthen in 1909, which resulted in the founding of the Beuthen History and Museum Association and the Oberschlesisches Landesmuseum in Beuthen in 1910 , which he ran with his father until he moved to Breslau in 1919.

He completed his habilitation in art history at the Technical University of Wroclaw and taught there until 1945 as a private lecturer in art studies at the Institute of Architecture. In his lectures he taught the construction students modeling and life drawing.

As an art historian, he is primarily concerned with the art history of his native Silesia . As a sculptor he created portrait busts in the Oberschlesisches Museum in Gleiwitz and nine portrait medallions at the Technical University of Wroclaw, portal figures at the Maria Magdalenen Gymnasium in Wroclaw and the war memorial in Zaborze . He made designs for portrait medallions, medals and plaques for the artificial iron foundry in Gleiwitz . He also created the designs for the animal sculptures “Mare with foal” and “Crouching bear” for the Reinhold Schlegelmilch porcelain factory in Tillowitz .
