Christened Edward Patrick "Pat" McAteer (born March 17, 1932 in Birkenhead , Merseyside , † April 30, 2009 in Annapolis ) was a British boxer .

Career

Pat McAteer, nicknamed Patmac, grew up in Birkenhead and started boxing as a teenager. He came from a boxer family, because his brothers Mick and Billy and his cousin Les McAteer were also professional boxers. His amateur time lasted about 3 years, but no outstanding results are known from this time.

In 1952 he became a professional boxer. His domicile was Liverpool and his manager Johnny Campbell.

Pat McAteer, equipped with good technique, had his first fight as a professional boxer on September 11, 1952 in Liverpool. He defeated his English compatriot Arthur Lewis in the middleweight division by knockout in the 2nd round. This was followed by 40 wins in 40 fights. He was also successful against a number of mostly European and British ranked boxers. On August 5, 1954, he defeated the German Leo Starosch on points in Liverpool , on December 9, 1954, he defeated the "Midlands Area" champion Les Allen in Liverpool and on March 4, 1955, he defeated the strong Emile Delmine in Manchester from Belgium on points. In the European ranking of the German trade journal Box Sport from April 1955, he was in the middleweight division behind Bubi Scholz , Germany , Pierre Langlois , France , Hans Stretz , Germany, Claude Milazzo , France, Johnny Sullivan , England, Franco Festucci , Italy and Peter Müller , Germany in 8th place. European champion at that time was Charles Humez from France.

On June 16, 1955, Pat McAteer boxed in Liverpool against Johnny Sullivan for the British Championship and the Championship of the British Empire & Commonwealth. In the 8th round, Johnny Sullivan suffered a low blow that was considered a "foul". Sullivan was disqualified and Pat McAteer was declared the winner of the fight.

After that, Pat McAteer achieved two important victories. On July 28, 1955, he beat the French André Drille on points in Liverpool and on November 12, 1955, he also defeated the African champion Mike Holt , South Africa , in Johannesburg in the battle for the British Empire & Commonwealth title over 15 rounds on points.

On April 10, 1956, Pat McAteer lost in Kensington to the South African Jimmy Elliott, who was rated weaker than Holt, surprisingly on points. That was his first defeat after 40 victorious fights. On June 29, 1956, he was defeated in Rome by the top Italian boxer Tiberio Mitri on points. On October 18, 1956, he then defended his title in Nottingham with a technical knockout victory in the 4th round over Lew Lazar. On December 19, 1956, Pat McAteer failed in Chicago while trying to get into the American boxing business in the fight against the American Spider Webb . He lost to Webb by technical knockout in the 2nd round.

On February 4, 1957 he got the chance to fight Charles Humez for the European middleweight title in the Parisian Palais des Sports. He lost this fight but after 15 rounds on points. On May 4, 1957, Pat McAteer defended the British Empire & Commonwealth Title against Jimmy Elliott in Johannesburg. McAteer won in the 7th round by knockout For Jimmy Elliott this fight had a tragic result, because he died a little later of the severe brain damage he had suffered in this fight.

Pat McAteer was also successful in his next title defense on September 5, 1957 in Liverpool. He won against Martin Hansen, a native Dane, but who had British citizenship, over 15 rounds on points. On November 11, 1957, Pat McAteer boxed in Cardiff in a non-title match against Dick Tiger from Nigeria . The fight against the German Hans Werner Wohlers on February 28, 1958 in Berlin ended with the same result . After this fight Pat McAteer was in the middleweight division of Europe in April 1958, the title holder was still Charles Humez, behind Gustav Scholz and Hans-Werner Wohlers in 3rd place, in front of Franz Szüzina , Germany and André Drille.

On March 27, 1958 Pa McAteer lost his British Empire & Commonwealth title by a knockout loss in the 9th round against Dick Tiger. When he lost on points on June 3, 1958 in White City against his English compatriot Terry Downes , he ended his career.

After his boxing career, Pat McAteer went to the United States and lived as a successful businessman in Fairfax near Washington, DC until his death
