Pierre Langlois (born March 31, 1925 in Pont-Audemer , Eure , † March 31, 1972) was a French boxer .

Career

After a short amateur period, Pierre Langlois became a professional boxer in 1947. He was a left sender who had excellent technical equipment. Throughout his professional career, he was not a pronounced puncher. He therefore won most of his victorious fights on points. He started at welterweight and grew into middleweight over the course of his career. It was managed by Roland Frilay and later by Jean Bretonnel.

He fought his first fight as a professional boxer on September 9, 1947 in Pont-Audemer, defeating Louis Gaudin on points. He achieved mixed results in the first two years of his career. The first notable result he achieved was a draw on May 5, 1948 in Evreux against the French ex-lightweight champion Louis Thierry . He suffered his first defeat on December 9, 1948 in Evreux when he lost to Pierre Le Mentec on points.

In 1949 Pierre Langlois went to Australia for eight fights and fought there in Sydney , Melbourne and Brisbane . After his return to France at the end of 1949, he won ten victorious fights in a row. On April 24, 1950 he got the chance to fight against Charles Humez for the French welterweight championship. Point winner in this comb, which was also scheduled for 15 rounds, was Charles Humez.

Then Pierre Langlois achieved a number of victories over strong opponents. On August 6, 1950, he defeated his French compatriot Gilbert Stock in Pont-Audemer after 10 rounds on points. On November 4, he beat the Belgian middleweight champion Emile Delmine on points in Brussels and on June 30, 1951, he beat in Marseille in the final for a title fight for the French welterweight championship Gilbert Lavoine on points. Pierre Langlois won this title on January 19, 1952 in Paris with a knockout victory in the 7th round over Guy Toupé .

In the French ranking of professional boxers at the end of 1952, Pierre Langlois was fifth in the middleweight division behind Charles Humez, Mickey Laurant , Claude Milazzo and Jacques Royer-Crézy (see Box Sport No. 51/1952, page 12).

After that, Pierre Langlois boxed frequently in the United States. On March 10, 1953, he defeated the Rhode Island Welterweight Auditorium Phil Burton on points. On May 1, 1952, he had to accept a technical knockout defeat in the 4th round in Montreal against Johnny Bratton . Bratton was world number one welterweight at that time. After this fight he only boxed middleweight. In this weight class he lost on June 23, 1952 in Brooklyn against Joey Giardello on points. On March 6, 1953, he celebrated a point victory over Rocky Castellani in New York . This was followed by three more points victories over strong opponents at short intervals: on March 18, 1953 in Dallas over Bobby Dykes, on March 30, 1953 in Brooklyn over Jimmy Beau and on April 15, 1953 in Miami Joe Miceli .

On June 17, 1953, Pierre Langlois lost in revenge against Rocky Castellani on points. On December 19, 1953, he fought a valuable draw in Syracuse against Carmen Basilio , the world number one welterweight and thus challenged world champion Kid Gavilán , but lost on January 26, 1954 in Philadelphia against Gil Turner on points. On May 21, 1954, he won a points victory over Joey Giardello in Madison Square Garden in New York. Before the fight against Giardello, Pierre Langlois was in the world rankings of the US boxing journal "The Ring" behind Rocky Castellani, Holly Mims , Joey Giardello, Tiberio Mitri , Italy and Bobby Dawson in 6. World champion was Carl "Bobo Olson ( see Box Sport No. 24/1854, page 8) With the victory over Giardello, Pierre Langlois put himself in a challenger role against world champion Olson.

On December 15, 1954, Pierre Langlois actually boxed against Carl Olson for the world middleweight title in Daly City . For 10 laps he bravely defended himself against the highly favored Carl "Bobo" Olson, but could not prevent a clear point deficit. In the 11th round he finally had to be removed from the fight after a gaping eyebrow injury over his left eye. Olson remained world champion.

Returned to France, Pierre Langlois was defeated on February 28, 1955 in Paris against Charles Humez by technical knockout in the 5th round. The cause for this was again an eyebrow injury. On September 26, 1955 he played his last fight in Paris, in which he defeated the Italian Gino Rossi on points.

Pierre Langlois died at the age of 47.
