Holly Mims (born February 10, 1927 in Washington, DC - † January 13, 1970 ) was an American boxer .

Career

Amateur career

Holly Mims started boxing at the YMCA in Washington as a teenager, supported by his brother James, who was also his first coach. Later he also trained a lot at the "Finlays Gym". He developed into a top boxer in the amateur camp and won the Washington "Golden Gloves" Championships in 1948. He was thus eligible to start at the US Championships (AAU Championships) this year in Boston, where he reached the semi-finals in the middleweight division, in which, however, he lost to Joe Jarman on points.

Profile career

Mims became a professional boxer in 1948. His domicile remained in Washington. It was managed by Nick and Benny Trotta. He developed into a boxer who never gave up from the start, was very versatile, tenacious, willing to take risks and persistently pursued his goals, but who, if the opponent made it necessary, could wait and fight with finesse. He did not have too much clout, which shows the relatively small number of fights he won by knockout. As a professional, he was in the ring for nineteen years and fought over a hundred fights. He lost only one of them by knockout. Many of the fights he lost he lost by a "split decision", i. H. one of the judges had seen him victorious. From 1953 to 1959 he was in the world rankings of the US boxing trade journal The Ring among the ten best boxers in the middleweight division. The best placement he achieved was a second place at the end of 1954 behind Rocky Castellani , but still ahead of Joey Giardello and Tiberio Mitri (see Box Sport No. 24/1954, page 8). But he never received a title fight for the world championship.

He fought his first fight on June 1, 1948 in Washington against Angelo Marino. This fight ended in a draw. On September 6, 1950, he won in Atlantic City over Don Ellis on points, who then boxed frequently in Germany . On November 6, 1950 and November 27, 1950 Mims won twice over Johnny Bratton over ten rounds on points. Bratton was already one of the best welterweights in the world.

On April 5, 1951, Mims fought in Miami against reigning middleweight world champion Sugar Ray Robinson . The fight was not for the title and was won by Robinson after ten rounds on points. With the victories over Bratton and the good fight against Robinson Mims became very well known in the world boxing scene.

On March 4, 1953 he defeated in Washington Willie Troy by knockout in the eighth round and on June 30, 1954 he reached a draw in Washington against Bobby Dykes . On January 12, 1955, he boxed against Rocky Castellani in Cleveland. If he had won, he would have gotten a title fight against world champion Carl Olson . But Castellani won the fight on points.

After this fight Mims boxed for twelve years until 1967. He was still in the ring with many world-class boxers, but defeats increased. On July 18, 1956, he lost in Chicago to Spider Webb on points, but beat the same opponent in the revenge on March 12, 1958 in Fort Wayne with the same result. On March 6, 1958 Mims had to admit defeat on points against Joey Giardello and on December 30, 1959 he also lost against the Nigerian Dick Tiger after ten rounds on points.

On November 29, 1961 Mims fought in Louisville in the middleweight division against Jimmy Ellis and won this fight after 10 rounds on points. Jimmy Ellis was none other than the eventual world heavyweight champion. Against Ellis he lost the revenge on points on May 4, 1962 in Louisville. This was followed by three more point defeats against top-class boxers: on December 22, 1962 in New York against Rubin Carter , on August 10, 1963 in Saratoga Springs against Emile Griffith and on February 7, 1964 in New York against Joey Archer . On May 15, 1964 followed in Elizabeth, NJ, against Joe Luis Adair the only knockout loss of Holly Mims in his career.

On March 16, 1966, he managed to win a points over the world-class man Vince Martinez in Richmond . Mims then played his last fight on July 6, 1967 in Portland, where he won points over George Johnson.

Holly Mims died of kidney failure on January 13, 1970.
