Govind Perumal

Govind Perumal (born September 25, 1925 , † September 17, 2002 in Nala Sopara , Thane ) was an Indian hockey player .

Perumal was part of an Indian national team in 1949 at a charity game between India and Bengal.

At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , Perumal played as a midfielder in all three matches of the Indians and won the gold medal after victories over the Austrians in the quarter-finals, the British in the semi-finals and the Dutch in the final.

Four years later at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , the Indians played in the preliminary round against Afghanistan, the USA and Singapore, with Perumal not playing against the USA. After beating the Germans in the semi-final, the Indians met Pakistan in the final for the first duel between these two teams since independence. With a 1-0 victory, the Indians won the gold medal, the sixth in a row at the Olympic Games. Except for the 16-0 win over the USA, Perumal played in all games in midfield.
