Assassination attempt and conviction

Singh shot and killed the Governor of Punjab Province, Michael O'Dwyer , on March 13, 1940 , when he was giving a speech at Caxton Hall in London to representatives of the East India Association and the Royal Central Asian Society. Singh did not try to escape and was arrested immediately. Udham Singh was charged for this act on April 1, convicted on June 5, and hanged in Pentonville Prison in London on July 31, 1940 . His letters to Shiv Singh Jauhal , written in prison, were later published.

During the trial he said:

“I did it because I had a grudge against him. He deserved it. He was the real culprit. He wanted to crush the spirit of my people, so I have crushed him. For full 21 years, I have been trying to wreak vengeance. I am happy that I have done the job. I am not scared of death. I am dying for my country. I have seen my people starving in India under the British rule. I have protested against this, it was my duty. What a greater honor could be bestowed on me than death for the sake of my motherland? "

“I did it because I was angry with him. He deserved it. He was the real culprit. He wanted to break the spirit of my people, so I destroyed him. I tried to retaliate for a full 21 years. I'm glad I did the job. I am not afraid of death. I am dying for my country. I have seen my people in India starve under the British. I protested against it, that was my duty. What greater honor could I be given than to die for my motherland? "
