Johann Theobald Riefesell
Johann Theobald Riefesell (born July 1, 1836 in Hamburg ; † January 19, 1895 there ) was a German painter and drawing teacher.
Life
Riefesell, the son of a stoneware dealer , first completed an apprenticeship as a gardener. At the same time he attended the drawing school of the Patriotic Society from 1765 and later learned from the painter and lithographer Wilhelm Heuer . A scholarship enabled him to study at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts . In 1860 he settled in Hamburg as a freelance painter and drawing teacher and taught the children of wealthy families. His students included the painter Molly Cramer and the draftsman Ebba Tesdorpf .
Over 1000 drawings of his extensive work have survived, in which he recorded the appearance of Hamburg's inner city before the major redesigns of the late 19th century.
Honors
In the area of the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery of the Ohlsdorf Cemetery , the graphic artist (with painter ), among others, commemorates Johann es Theobald Riefesell on the double collective grave . In 1956 the Riefesellstrasse in Hamburg-Barmbek-Nord was named after him.
