Sean Thomas McGoldrick (* 3. December 1991 in Newport , Wales ) is a British boxer in the bantamweight .

Amateur career

Sean McGoldrick is of Irish descent and grew up in the Bettws settlement in Newport. He started boxing at the age of eight and was initially trained by Tony Borg. His brother Liam McGoldrick was also a boxer. Sean McGoldrick was a member of the UK national team for six years and was named Junior Sportsman of the Year in Wales in 2010 . His amateur record is 165 wins and 35 losses.

After he had reached the quarter-finals of the European Youth Championships in Poland in 2009, he became Welsh champion for the first time in 2010 with a final victory against Joseph Cordina . He also took part in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India , where he reached the final with wins against Jessie Lartey, Tyrone McCullough and Bruno Julie . There he lost 7: 7+ against Manju Wanjarachchi, but this had tested positive for doping after the fight, whereupon McGoldrick was subsequently named the winner.

As reigning Commonwealth Champion, he started in 2011 at the European Championships in Ankara and the World Championships in Baku , but lost in each case in the first fight against Furkan Ulaş Memiş . In November 2011 he won another tournament in London against Luke Boyd and Worapoj Petchkoom , and in April 2012 another tournament in Estonia with wins against Ruslanas Jefremovas and Joe Ham. In December 2012 he lost in the round of 16 of the U22 European Championships in Russia against Vladimir Nikitin .

At the 2013 European Championships in Minsk he was eliminated against Selçuk Eker and at the 2013 World Championships in Almaty against Jhonny Blanco. In 2014 he won the Strandja tournament in Bulgaria , beating Alexandru Usatenco, Stefano Gasparri, Artem Chotenow and Segundo Padilla. He also won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland . After wins against Jackson Woods and Ayabonga Sonjica , he lost in the semifinals to Michael Conlan . In November 2015 he won the Tammer tournament in Finland by beating Ryuji Kanaka and Adrian Kowal.

In 2012, 2013 and 2015 he boxed for the British Lionhearts team in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) and won four out of seven fights.

Professional career

In March 2017 he signed a professional contract with the British promoter Matchroom Boxing . He is managed by MTK Global and trained by Gavin Rees . He made his professional debut on March 25, 2017 in Manchester against Brett Fidoe. In August 2019 he lost on points to Thomas Essomba .
