Shakur Stevenson (* 28. June 1997 in Newark , New Jersey as Ash-Shakur Nafi-Shahid Stevenson ) is an American boxer and current WBO world champion at featherweight . He is one of the world's best boxers in his weight class.

Personal

Stevenson was born and raised in Newark, then moved to Hampton , Virginia , and trained at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs , Colorado , among others . He was named by his mother after the rapper Tupac Shakur , who was murdered less than a year before Stevenson's birth.

Amateur career

Stevenson started boxing at the age of five. He won the US Junior Championships and the Junior World Championships in Kiev in 2013 . He defeated the starters from Tajikistan, Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

In 2014 he won the US Youth Championships and the Ringside World Tournament in the USA, as well as the Youth World Championships in Sofia and the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing . At the Youth World Cup he defeated Juan Camacho from Puerto Rico, Chursant Imankulijew from Tajikistan, Carlos Silva from Brazil, Lu Ping from China and Muhammad Ali from England, while at the youth games Daniel Asenow from Bulgaria, and again Muhammed Ali and Lu Ping could defeat. He has also won international tournaments in Ukraine and Russia. As a result, he was unbeaten in all of his 17 international fights so far, and in 2014 he was the first American boxer to be voted “World Junior Fighter of the Year” by AIBA .

In 2015 he won the U.S. bantamweight youth championships. In November and December 2015, he won the national Olympic qualifications in Baltimore and Reno . In January and February 2016 he won the World Series of Boxing (WSB) against Peter McGrail of the British Lionhearts and against Mohamed Hamout of the Morocco Atlas Lions. In March 2016 he also won the Olympic qualification of the American continent in Buenos Aires . He defeated Luis Ruiz from Colombia, Mathias Bagnado from Uruguay, Jose Diaz from Venezuela and Alberto Melián from Argentina. He was already unbeaten in 23 international fights.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he reached the final against Robenilson de Jesus (3: 0), Erdenebatyn Tsendbaatar (3: 0) and Wladimir Nikitin (WO), where he lost just 1: 2 to Robeisy Ramírez .

Professional career

Stevenson switched to the professional camp in 2017 under the promoter Top Rank and won his debut prematurely on April 22nd against Edgar Brito. In April 2018 he defeated the also undefeated Roxberg Riley prematurely in the second round.

On October 13, 2018, he defeated Viorel Simion by TKO in the first round and in January 2019 Jessie Rosales by TKO in the fourth round, winning the featherweight titles WBC Continental Americas and IBF Intercontinental .

In April 2019 he also won the NABO North America title against Christopher Diaz . On October 26, 2019, he won the WBO featherweight world title with a unanimous victory over the previously undefeated Joet Gonzalez.
