Viorel Simion (* 19th October 1981 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian professional boxer in the featherweight .

Career

As an amateur, Simion became European Cadet Champion in Bitola in 1997 and European Junior Champion in Rijeka in 1999 . In 2001 he won the Francophonie Games in Ottawa and in 2002 a bronze medal at the European Championships in Perm . In 2004 he won first place in the European Olympic qualification in Gothenburg and second place in the EU championships in Madrid . He then started at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , where he was just eliminated in the quarter-finals against Jo Seok-hwan 36:39. At the 2005 World Championships in Mianyang , he won a bronze medal.

In 2006 he switched to the professional camp and won the WBC Mediterranean title in 2008 and the WBC international championship title in 2011. He suffered his first defeat in England in 2013 against Lee Selby . In March 2016, he won the IBF Intercontinental Featherweight Title.

In April 2017 Simion lost to Scott Quigg in London and to Shakur Stevenson in the USA in October 2018 .
