Jo Seok-hwan

Jo Seok-hwan (born October 15, 1979 ) is a former South Korean boxer . Jo was a bronze medalist at the 2003 World Championships and the 2004 Olympic Games and a silver medalist at the 2004 Asian Championships.

Career

Jo took part in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , but lost the bantamweight (-54 kg) starting in the first fight against Alisher Rahimov, Uzbekistan (RSC 3rd). The same thing happened to him at the World Championships the following year. Here he was defeated in the preliminary round by Arlan Lerio, Philippines (13: 7).

In 2002 Jo switched to featherweight (-57 kg) and reached the quarter-finals at the Asian Games , which he lost to the later silver medalist Galib Schafarow , Kazakhstan (26:21). At the Asian Championships in the same year he was eliminated in the first fight against Kim Song-guk , North Korea . Things went better for Jo for the first time at the 2003 World Championships , where he won the bronze medal. During the tournament he beat u. a. Alexei Tishchenko , Russia (40: 8), and lost again to Schafarow in the semi-finals. In the same year he also won the bronze medal at the one-time Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad .

In 2004, Jo won the silver medal behind Schawarow at the Asian Championships, which means he qualified for the Olympic Games in the same year. In these games he reached the semi-finals after victories over Sedat Tasci, Turkey (37:28), Benoit Gaudet, Canada (28:16), and Viorel Simion, Romania (39:36), which he lost to the eventual Olympic champion Tischtschenko (45:25) and won a bronze medal.

Jo's last international championships were the 2006 Asian Games, where he was eliminated in the first fight against Xie Longwang, China (32:15). In December 2008 he ended his career. He is currently the assistant coach of the South Korean national team.
