Daniel Panew Asenow ( Bulgarian Даниел Асенов * 17th May 1997 in Yambol ) is a Bulgarian boxer in the flyweight .
Career
Asenov won a bronze medal at the European Schoolchildren Championships 2010 in Yambol and the 2011 European Schoolchildren Championships in Grozny .
In 2012 he won the silver medal at the European Junior Championships in Sofia . At the Junior World Championships in 2013 in Kiev , he failed only in the quarterfinals with 1: 2 against the Russian Roman Kostjuk. For this he won the 2013 European Junior Championships in Anapa .
In 2014 he failed in the quarter-finals of the Youth World Championships in Sofia , but qualified in the subsequent box-offs for the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing . There he was again defeated in the quarterfinals against Shakur Stevenson from the USA, but was declared the winner in the fight for fifth place because his opponent Masud Jusifsade from Azerbaijan did not appear. In October 2014 he made second place at the European Youth Championships in Zagreb .
In 2015 he started in the elite class for the first time and took part in the European Games in Baku in June , where he defeated the Spaniard Kelvin de la Nieve , but was then eliminated 1: 2 by Elvin Məmişzadə from Azerbaijan. In August he won the European Championships in Samokow . On the way to the title, he beat Igor Sopinski from Ukraine (3-0), Nándor Csóka from Hungary (3-0) and Muhammad Ali from England (3-0).
At the 2015 World Championships in Doha , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Uzbek Olschas Sattibajew 0: 3.
In April 2016 he started the European Olympic qualification in Samsun, Turkey . With wins against Alexander Riscan from Moldova (3: 0) and Avtandil Chubabria from Georgia (3: 0) he reached the semi-finals, but lost to the Englishman Muhammad Ali (0: 3). In the battle for the important third place he lost to Brendan Irvine from Ireland (0: 3). In order to still be able to take part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he took part in the worldwide Olympic qualification in Baku in June 2016 . He surprisingly won the tournament with victorious duels against Kelvin de la Nieve from Spain (3-0), Asat Usenalijew from Kyrgyzstan (3-0), Elie Konki from France (3-0), Selçuk Eker from Turkey (TKO) and Antonio Vargas from the USA (3-0).
At the 2016 Olympic Games he defeated Fernando Daniel Martínez from Argentina (2: 1), but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Algerian Mohamed Flissi (0: 3). In March 2017 he won the U22 European Championships in Brăila by beating Gabriel Escobar in the final .
He won another gold medal at the 2017 European Championships in Kharkiv after beating Belik Galanow from Russia (4: 1), Tarik Ibrahim from Germany (5: 0), Dmytro Samotajew from Ukraine (5: 0) and Niall Farrell from England ( 3: 2) had defeated. He had thus qualified for the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg , where he was eliminated in the round of 16 with 2: 3 against Jasurbek Latipov .
At the U22 European Championships in 2018 in Târgu Jiu , he won the gold medal by beating Vahe Badalyan, Tarik Ibrahim, Billal Bennama and again Gabriel Escobar. In 2019 he again won the U22 European Championships in Vladikavkaz after defeating Emil Aliyev, Marian Șchiopu, Rostislaw Bilostotskyi and Kiaran MacDonald.
At the 2019 European Games in Minsk , he defeated Hamza Touba , Billal Bennama and Galal Yafai before losing to Gabriel Escobar in the final and winning the silver medal. He then took part in the 2019 World Championships in Yekaterinburg and defeated Aldoms Suguro from Indonesia and Michael Angeletti from the USA in the preliminary rounds before he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Uzbek Olympic champion Shahobiddin Zoirov .
On March 24, 2017, Asenov made his debut in the World Series of Boxing (WSB), defeating Abdelali Daraa .
Awards
For 2015 Daniel Asenow was voted “Best Young Athlete of Bulgaria” by sports journalists and awarded by Viasport. He had prevailed against the tennis player Adrian Andreev and the ski racer Albert Popow .
