Torsten Koch (born September 29, 1960 in Greifswald ) is a former German boxer and two-time GDR champion in 1985 and 1986.

Career

Torsten Koch moved with his family from Greifswald to Berlin as a child . There he started boxing in 1969. At the age of 18, he joined the National People's Army and trained as a member of the Berlin-Treptow Army Sports Association under Erwin Kramer. From November 1976 he boxed for ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) , his trainer was Dietrich Bleck.

In 1975 Torsten Koch won the Spartakiade and in 1977 he was part of a GDR junior national team for the first time , which boxed against Poland's juniors. He came thereby in the flyweight to a point victory over Andrzej Danielak. As a senior Torsten boxed at a height of 1.82 meters in featherweight, the weight class up to 57 kg body weight. He later switched to the light or light welterweight division. At the beginning of his senior career he faced strong competition in his weight classes from world class boxers Richard Nowakowski , Frank Rauschning , Rudi Fink , Siegfried Mehnert and Andreas Zülow .

In 1979 he was runner-up in the featherweight division of the GDR. In the final he was defeated by his club colleague Rudi Fink , who was to become Olympic champion in 1980 , by breaking off in the first round. He achieved medals at GDR championships in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1986 and 1987. He won the GDR championship title in 1985 and 1986 with points wins over Burkhard Hohn from SC Traktor Schwerin .

He achieved his first major success in international boxing in 1982. He won the 17th championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact in Havana , which were always extremely strong. In the final he won it in featherweight over Georgi Pehliwanow from Bulgaria .

In 1985 he was used at the European championship in Budapest in the lightweight. He won there over Racheed Lawal from Denmark , Stamatios Kolethras from Greece and Nurlan Abdukalykow from the Soviet Union (5-0 judges' votes). In the final he was defeated by the very strong Bulgarian Emil Tschuprenski on points (1: 4) and became vice- European champion . Torsten Koch celebrated another major international success that same year at the World Cup in Seoul . He won against Jung Haee-yo from South Korea (5: 0), Derrick Robinson from the United States (5: 0) and Engels Pedrozo from Venezuela (4: 1) and was the winner of this tournament.

At the 1986 World Cup in Reno , Torsten Koch won over Poland's Krzysztof Kosedowski on points (5: 0), but lost again to Emil Tschuprenski in the quarter-finals, but this defeat was very close with 2: 3 judges' votes. He came in 5th place in the lightweight category.

Torsten Koch's last start at an international championship was at the 1987 European championship in Turin . He was defeated there in the round of 16 against the Italian Michele Caldarella on points (1: 4) and came in 9th place.

Torsten Koch, who was a sergeant major in the NVA , completed a degree in education after his boxing career . In 1986 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver in the GDR .

In 2011, Torsten Koch was the emergency manager of the Eisenhüttenstadt (Gewi) building management company.
