Emil Tschuprenski

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emil Tschuprenski Todorow ( Bulgarian Емил Тодоров Чупренски ; born September 14, 1960 in Sofia ) is a former Bulgarian boxer . He was the European lightweight amateurs champion in 1983 and 1985 .

Career

Emil Tschuprenski started boxing as a teenager in Sofia . To do this, he became a member of the Slavia Sofia sports club . With a height of 1.75 m, with a few exceptions, he always boxed in the lightweight, the weight class up to 60 kg body weight.

He celebrated his first international success in 1977 when he finished 2nd at the Featherweight Balkan Junior Championships in Athens after losing points to Viorel Ioana from Romania . In 1978 he won a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Dublin in the lightweight. In the semifinals he was defeated by Patrizio Oliva from Italy , a later Olympic champion and professional boxing world champion, by just 2: 3 judges' votes.

In 1979, Emil Tschuprenski started for the first time at a European Senior Championship. In Cologne he had to admit defeat in the round of 16 against Adam Piwowarski from Poland on points and finished in 9th place in the lightweight. At the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 and at the European Championships in 1981, the lightweight Jordan Lessow started for Bulgaria and Emil Tschuprenski was not used at the 1982 World Cup. But in 1982 he became Balkan Champion in Bursa with a point victory over Viorel Ioana from Romania.

He was used again in 1983 at the European Championships in Varna , where he won the lightweight title in a superior style. On the way to this he defeated Hassan Dzavid from Yugoslavia , Istvan Turu from Hungary , Wiktor Demjanenko from the USSR and Carlo Russolino from Italy each unanimously with 5-0 judges' votes.

He was again denied participation in the 1984 Olympic Games because Bulgaria, like most of the Eastern Bloc countries at the time, boycotted the Los Angeles Games for political reasons. In 1985 he succeeded in becoming European lightweight champion for the second time in Budapest . He defeated Mehmet Demir from Turkey , Michele Caldarella from Italy and Jose Tuominen from Finland, each with a 5-0 judge's vote on points. Only in the final fight against Torsten Koch from the GDR did a judge decide for Koch. Emil Tschuprenski's 4-1 point victory was well deserved.

Emil Tschuprenski also won a medal at the 1986 World Cup in Reno . In tough fights with consistently close results, he defeated Jin Chul-jun from South Korea and Torsten Koch each with 3-2 judges' votes, before losing to Engels Pedroza from Venezuela with the same result in the semi- finals. That left him with a bronze medal at the World Championships . In 1987 Emil Tschuprenski reached the final of a European Championship for the third time in a row. In Turin he had to beat the lightweight Orsubek Nasarow from the USSR on points against (0: 5) and was thus runner-up European champion .

In 1988 Emil Tschuprenski was able to take part in the Olympic Games in Seoul for the first time. But he missed there in the lightweight after a demolition win in the 2nd round over Eduardo de la Pena from Guiana and a point win over Mark Kennedy from Jamaica (5-0) due to a narrow point defeat in the quarter-finals against Romallis Ellis from the United States (2 : 3) the entry into the semi-finals and thus also an Olympic medal.

Emil Tschuprenski last took part in an international championship in 1989. At the European Championships this year in Athens he first won over Silvio Mezzenga from the Netherlands on points (4: 1), but surprisingly lost to Dave Anderson from Scotland in the quarterfinals and came in 5th place. In 1989 he started in Varna as part of a comparison match between Bulgaria and a European selection against the strong Kostya Tszyu from the USSR, against whom he suffered a demolition defeat in the 2nd round.

After Emil Tschuprenski resigned from active boxing at the end of 1989, he started a career as a professional boxer in 1992. He played it between August 30, 1992 and August 17, 1997 eighteen fights, of which he won eight and lost eight. He drew twice from his opponent. He did not win the championship title.
