Airat Kassimowitsch Chamatow ( Russian Айрат Касимович Хаматов ; born February 2, 1965 in Kazan ) is a former Soviet boxer and 1989 world champion in featherweight .

Career

Khamatov was Soviet runner-up in 1989 and started at the 1989 World Championships in Moscow , where he won the gold medal. He beat Ostavian Stoica, Romania, Abbas Khalaf, Iraq, Ha Hwa-Tae, North Korea, Arnaldo Mesa , Cuba and Kirkor Kirkorow , Bulgaria en route to the title .

In 1990 he also won the AIBA Challenge Matches in West Berlin by winning another final against Kirkor Kirkorow. At the Goodwill Games in Seattle in 1990 , he won the bronze medal after losing to Óscar de la Hoya in the semi-final .

In 1991 he won the last Soviet championships by beating Artur Grigorian in the final and took part in the 1991 European championships in Gothenburg . After victories against Martin Harley, England, Tibor Rafael , Czech Republic and Tontscho Tontschew , Bulgaria, as well as defeat in the final against Vasile Nistor , Romania, he won the silver medal.

He also won tournaments in Thailand and France. From 1992 to 1994 he played eight professional fights with two wins, two draws and four losses.
