Tonscho Tonschew

Tonscho Dimitrov Tonschew ; Bulgarian : Тончо Димитров Тончев; English transcription : Toncho Dimitrov Tonchev (* 1. December 1972 in Sliven ) is a former Bulgarian boxer . Tonschew was a bronze medalist at the 1991 European Championships and a silver medalist at the 1996 European Championships and the 1996 Olympic Games .

Career

amateur

Tonschew fought for the boxing department of CSKA Sofia at international tournaments and major events. In April 1988 he reached the flyweight at the 4th International Junior Tournament in Tampere, Finland, the silver medal after he was only defeated in the final Frank Sygmund from the GDR. In June of the same year, the bronze medal in flyweight followed at the 7th Junior Trophy Italia in Santa Teresa Gallura . This time he failed in the final against Markus Beyer .

In June 1989 he won the featherweight silver medal at the 8th Junior Trophy Italia , defeating Juan Felicies from Spain in the quarterfinals and Tiziano Becci from Italy in the semifinals. In the final he lost to János Petrovics from Hungary.

In August 1989 he took part in bantamweight at the Junior World Championships in Bayamón , where he defeated Paul Griffin from Ireland 4-1 in the round of 16, but was defeated in the quarterfinals against Murat Kasenow from the Soviet Union 20:25. In 1997 Tonchev turned pro and won his first 24 fights by 2001. He won the "WBA Inter-Continental Title", the "WBC International Title" and the EBU European Championship title in lightweight and defeated, among others, László Bognár, Kirkor Kirkorow and the former world champion in featherweight Anatoly Alexandrov. In the same year Tonschew lost to the lower class Luis Alfonso Lizarraga by technical knockout in the sixth round after he had already gone down twice in the first round.

After another defeat in 2002 against Daniel Attah, Tonschew's career did not really get going. Although he still won various titles, for example the one world title of the rather insignificant association WBU, he also had to accept defeats again and again. Among other things, he lost in 2005 to the later European champion Sergey Gulyakevich and in 2007 to the reigning European champion Yuri Romanov. After another defeat in 2007 against the eventual European champion and World Cup challenger to Amir Khan Paul McCloskey, Tonschew ended his career.
