Idel torriente

Idel Torriente Leal (born September 9, 1986 ) is a Cuban boxer . He was in 2007 winner of the Pan American Games and 2008 winner of the Pan American Championships, both in the featherweight division.

Career

Idel Torriente, who was already very successful as a junior, was accepted into the Cuban national boxer team in 2005 and assigned to the Havana performance center . In 2005 he made his first appearance at the Cuban Seniors Championship. He met Olympic and world champion Guillermo Rigondeaux in the bantamweight division in the quarterfinals , against whom he lost on points after a good fight (2: 5). In 2006 he defeated the great talent Rosniel Iglesias at the Cuban championship in the semi-finals of the bantamweight to the surprise of the experts on points, but could not achieve anything in the final against Guillermo Rigondeaux and was clearly defeated on points.

In 2007 he started at the Cuban featherweight championship and was Cuban champion for the first time with a point win (21:18) over Ivan Onate . He now also came to international assignments. At the 26th Independence Cup in Santiago de los Caballeros in the cathedral. Rep. He won over Roberto Navarro, Dom. Rep., By breaking off in the 2nd round and also triumphed over his compatriot Javier Fortuna by breaking off in the 3rd round. At the international tournament of the Cuban boxing federation Giraldo Córdova Cardín in Santa Clara , he won the final battle over Ivan Onate and was thus the tournament winner in the featherweight division. Idel Torriente also won the subsequent qualification tournament for the Pan American Games in Barquisimeto / Venezuela . He came to a point win over Miguel Marriage, Colombia (20:13), to a knockout victory in the 3rd round over Franklin Manzanilla from Venezuela and to a point win (17: 5) over Abner Cotto , Puerto Rico . At the Pan American Games 2007 itself, which took place in Rio de Janeiro , Idel Torriente won over Jesus Cuellar from Argentina by breaking off in the 2nd round and was point winner over Nicholas Walters from Jamaica , Orlando Rizo from Nicaragua and Abner Cotto. The victory over Abner Cotto was relatively close with 7: 5 goals. But for Idel Torriente he was enough to win these Pan American Games.

Of course, Idel Torriente also wanted to compete in the 2007 World Championships in Chicago . The Cuban Boxing Association withdrew its registration for this championship at short notice because of alleged security problems. In reality it was a reaction to the fact that Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandi Lara had broken away from the Cuban team in Rio de Janeiro because they wanted to become professional boxers in Germany . Both boxers were returned to Cuba with the dubious cooperation of the Brazilian authorities . At a start in Chicago, the communist system in Cuba evidently feared further escape attempts by its boxers.

Idel Torriente started in 2007 at the National Team Championship of the Cuban Competence Centers. Starting for Havana , he won over Yoendris Leyra, Santiago de Cuba , by breaking off in the 2nd round, over Alexander Aragon from Sancti Spíritus by breaking off in the 1st round, over Yoanny Limonta, Guantánamo , by breaking off in the 1. Round, over Exer Rodriguez, Camagüey , by breaking off in the 4th round and over Luis Franco , Pinar del Río , on points. These five fights had to be completed within a week. This championship shows how the Cuban boxers get their toughness, which makes them so successful in international championships.

2008 began with a loss for Idel Torriente. In the final of the Cuban featherweight championship he was defeated by Ivan Onate on points (5: 9) and was only runner-up. He also lost the final battle against Muscat Ospanow from Kazakhstan on points (4:10) at the subsequent 4th Cuban Olympics in Havana . He also suffered a defeat at the Strandja tournament in Plovdiv / Bulgaria after defeating Maksat Ospanow in the quarter-finals. He lost against Dimitri Bulenkow from Ukraine clearly on points (12:22). The Cuban Association continued to rely on him and sent him to the Grand Prix tournament in Ústí nad Labem (Aussig). There he won over Dordschnjambuugiin Otgondalai from Mongolia , Paul Flemming, Australia and Chottelal Yadav from India each on points and was tournament winner in featherweight.

Idel Torriente was also in excellent form at the America Group's Olympic qualification tournament in Port of Spain / Trinidad . He took 1st place there with victories over Ray Sandiford, Guayana , Angel Rodriguez, Venezuela, Robson Conceicao, Brazil and Luis Porozo, Ecuador , thus qualifying for the Olympic Games in Beijing . Also at the weakly occupied Pan American Championships in 2008 in Cuenca / Ecuador, Idel Torriente was the winner. Since his semi-final opponent Camillo Perez from Puerto Rico could not compete due to an injury, a point win over Luis Porozo (11: 3) was enough for him to win the title. At the last start before the Olympic Games in Beijing, Idel Torriente in Havana suffered a surprising loss of points in the international match between Cuba and France from Frenchman Khedafi Djelkhir.

At the Olympic boxing tournament in Beijing in 2008 Idel Torriente won over Prince Dzanie from Ghana (11: 2) and Dsorigtbaataryn Enchdsorig from Mongolia (10: 9). In the quarterfinals he lost against Sahin Imranow from Azerbaijan just on points (14:16), which meant he was eliminated and without a medal.

At the Boxing World Championships in Milan in 2009, Torriente was the favorite in the lightweight category, but only reached the quarter-finals after winning over Kazakhs Gani Zhilauov (11: 7) and Dutchman Husnu Kocebas (8: 0) retired against eventual world champion Domenico Valentino , Italy (5:10).
