The SJ D were steam locomotives of the Swedish State Railways (SJ) for passenger trains and light freight trains. It had the wheel arrangement 1'B n2.

history

In the years 1874/75 the SJ got new locomotives for express trains and passenger trains from Borsig in Berlin . The class D was similar to the express train locomotive C with the exception of the drive wheel diameter and various details . A slightly lower top speed was offset by the higher tractive effort.

After the first 18 locomotives from Borsig, further examples were delivered by the Swedish locomotive workshops Nydqvist och Holm in Trollhättan and Motala Verkstad in Motala .

SJ Da1 and SJ Da2

Regardless of manufacturer and year of construction, all SJ locomotives were initially given a name. The numbers beginning with D in 1874 and 1875 did not indicate a series; at that time each individual locomotive was run as a "separate series" . It was not until 1876 that all locomotives were designated as the D series. 53 locomotives had been procured by 1891. Various redrawings overlapped. In 1886 the series was renamed Da .

In 1890, the series was divided into the sub-series Da1 (179–184, 199–214, 238–240, 259, 260, 290–294 and 320–322) and Da2 (182, 239, 323–327 and 347– ) according to the number of heating pipes . 356). By swapping the boiler, Da1 182 became Da2 182 in 1904 . The same happened to Da1 239 , which became Da2 239 .

Most of the Da1 series machines were taken out of service between 1912 and 1918. Da1 212 was the last of its series to remain operational until 1927. It was only sold for scrapping in 1929. It was similar with the locomotives of the Da2 series . Here was the last locomotive of the Da2 349 series , which remained in service until 1925 and was scrapped in 1927.

The locomotives were in service with the Ab, C, I and DK tenders.

SJ Db

In 1891 Statens Järnväger purchased another three locomotives, which were supplied by Motala Verkstad. They had a completely different boiler and were therefore referred to as the Db series. The last of this series, Db 400 , was scrapped in Örebro in 1925.

Sales

MYJ 322 : In 1911 Malmö-Ystads Järnvägsaktiebolag (MYJ) bought the SJ Da1 322 and referred to it as MYJ 322 . It was only used for one year and was scrapped in 1912.

BJ A 302 : In 1916, the then largest private railway company in Sweden, Bergslagernas Järnvägar , acquired the SJ Da2 324 locomotive and renamed it BJ A 302 . It remained in use until it was scrapped in 1926.

MHJ 4 : Mjölby – Hästholmen Järnväg (MHJ) bought the SJ Da2 351 in 1918 . With the designation MHJ 4 , it had an operating time of about ten years and was scrapped in 1928.

DHdJ 6 : The Dala – Hälsinglands Järnväg (DHdJ) took over a locomotive from the series in 1912 with the SJ Da2 353 and called it DHdJ 6 . The locomotive's service life ended in 1918.

Museum locomotive

The Da2 347 locomotive was parked in 1922 and kept for the Järnvägsmuseum in Tomteboda . It is now part of the Swedish Railway Museum in Gävle .
