Samuel Mbugua

Samuel Mbugua (born January 1, 1946 ) is a retired Kenyan boxer . Mbugua was bronze medalist at the 1972 Olympic Games and the 1974 Commonwealth Games , silver medalist at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and African champion in 1972. He was also a participant in the 1968 Olympic Games .

Career

In 1968 Mbugua took part in the bantamweight (-54 kg) Olympic Games and, after victories over Dhanraj Singh, Guyana (5: 0), and Giuseppe Mura, Italy (3: 2), lost in the quarter-finals against the eventual Olympic champion Walerian Sokolow , Soviet Union (5-0), off. At the 1970 Commonwealth Games he won the silver medal after losing to Sulley Shittu, Ghana in the final .

In 1972 Mbugua became the African lightweight champion (-60 kg) and won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games that took place that year . During the tournament he beat Girmaye Gabre, Ethiopia (5-0), Muniswamy Venu, India (5-0), and Svein Erik Paulsen, Norway (4-1). In the semifinals he was supposed to meet the later Olympic champion Jan Szczepański , Poland , but could not compete due to an injury, so that he moved into the final without a fight.

After a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 1974 in the featherweight (-57 kg) Mbugua ended his career.
