Hermann Virl

Hermann Virl (* 22. June 1903 in Munich , † 2. August 1958 ) was an active in Munich graphic artist , graphic designer and artist .

life and career

Virl studied from 1919 to 1923 at the State School for Applied Arts in Munich with Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke and Richard Riemerschmid . He then worked as a studio manager in a newspaper publisher in Saarbrücken, before living as a freelance graphic designer in Munich from 1924 to 1926 and working on the magazine "Fliegende Blätter". In 1926 Virl became a professor at the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule in Kassel; there he also headed the graphic department. From 1931 to 1945 he taught at the master school for Germany's book printers, which later became the academy for the graphic industry, which is now part of the Munich University of Applied Sciences. From 1945 to 1958 Virl lived again as a freelance graphic artist and painter in Munich. In 1949 he designed a 100 DM banknote with a portrait of Goethe , which was rejected in favor of Max Bittrof's design .
